A key that won’t turn or come out of the ignition is one of the most common car-lock problems we’re called about. Before you force anything — which can snap the key or damage the ignition cylinder — work through these steps.
Why keys get stuck in the ignition
- The car isn’t fully in Park. Most vehicles only release the key in Park (or Neutral for some manuals). Rock the shifter firmly into Park.
- The steering wheel is locked. If you turned the wheel after shutting off, the lock can bind the ignition. Wiggle the wheel left and right while gently turning the key.
- A worn key or cylinder. Years of use round off the key’s cuts or wear the wafers inside the lock, so it no longer aligns to release.
- Debris or a dead battery. Dirt in the keyway, or a dead 12V battery on push-to-start hybrids, can freeze the mechanism.
How to get the key out safely
- Confirm the car is off and in Park.
- Jiggle the steering wheel side to side while applying light, steady pressure to the key — never yank.
- Try a tiny amount of electrical-contact cleaner or graphite lubricant in the keyway (avoid oil, which attracts grime).
- Gently tap the key with your palm while turning — sometimes a stuck wafer just needs a nudge.
When to call a locksmith
If the key still won’t budge, stop. A snapped key inside the ignition is far more expensive to fix. A mobile auto locksmith can extract a broken key, repair or replace the ignition cylinder, and cut a fresh key on-site — usually within the hour and without towing.
